Just Between Us: Poem from Laboring to Love an Abusive Mate by Nicholl McGuire

Several weeks have gone by
and I lost track of time
because I kept seeing your face
dance through my mind.

Your beauty magnetic; your charm
unique.  There were nights I had
trouble getting to sleep.

Your voice was forever ringing
in my ears as I tried to collect
all my lost tears.

Songs shared between us
were something missed--
only reminders of lovemaking
between a kiss.

Deep soul confessions, just
between us, there were times
when we needed to cry and fuss.

Expressions of true love,
always in the making, but at times
we weren't ready
for love--its strong taking.

Embedded in my heart and embedded
in my mind is engraved you
and a future so I sit down and pray.

And I know something now
that I didn't know then and that is
I'm ready to move on again.

Mental

Her far off stare
she isn't there.

Nothing but air,
under her hair.

Man broke her heart,
she's still bleeding from the dart.

Once was a pretty girl,
use to wear one pretty curl.

It hung down in her one eye,
always there to cover a lie.

Women like her are forever ruined.
Always in a crowd constantly feuding.

For she never blames the man for a thing,
still got memories of that ring.

Cry little woman, go on ahead, just cry.
I told ya'll women, stop living a lie!

Now the pain makes you feel like your going to die.
That's right your momma will only sigh.

Cause you are the one who thinks she knows best,
that is until you play the game of chess.

What you don't know is you will always be running.
Keep falling for men who are nothing but cunning.

I Won't Be Leaving Again

Packed my bags, left behind my heart.
No longer wanted to hear you breathing.

I needed time and space.
Sought a new direction.
But instructions only led me back to you.

So I made a u-turn
in my thoughts and in my feelings.

It started with a memory, next your voice
and I became hard of hearing.

Didn't want to think of what I did.
Couldn't stomach what you said or did.

Started to focus on the good things.
Believed that things would get better.

Reasoned rest would help us.
Made up in my mind I would take the test.

Hoped and prayed.
Cried and moaned.

Desired to hear you breathing once again.
Wanted to relieve you of any pain I had caused.

Visualized what happiness looked like,
needed to know you still loved me.

Back in your arms is where I belong,
back in your arms is where I belong.

A Lovely History

When we first met,
it was hard to let
our feelings show.

There was school work to do.
Making time for us, we had no clue,
and watchful eyes didn't approve.

Clueless on what to expect.
Tried to forget.
But love kept right on shining.

As we grew older,
we got bolder
friends and family were put on notice.

Together we built our life,
with fuss and some strife.
But the good was our foundation.

Had to figure out
what love was about
and that's when we met God.

It didn't matter that we had taken our time.
For love like ours didn't cost a dime.
So we made a vow to one another.

There were the babies
and desperate ladies.
Even ugly men filled with sin.

But we kept right on fighting
with every enemy sighting.
Thank God for a praying family.

Through tears and fears,
sighs and cries
we stand before one another.

With outstretched arms
and a history of charms
we know that this is it!

I Love You

You love me when I'm down,
feel me when I'm across town.
I love my class clown.

Know when I'm sad.
Know how to make me glad.
I thank my heavenly dad.

You bring me so much joy
even when you act so coy--
winding me up like a play toy.

Where would I be without you?
I think I have one of the few.
Sometimes I don't know what to do.

So wonderful and unique
with a beautiful physique.
You are a treasure to keep.

Thank you for this wedding day.

May we be blessed as we lay.

And thank you for those three words
you always love to say.
